Abstract
The Tobacco Control Plan for England (2011) set out a national ambition to reduce smoking as recorded at time of delivery. It was recognised that if rates continued to fall at levels seen over the previous six years this ambition would not be achieved.
In 2012 we were challenged by the public health minister to identify ways to make further progress in this area. A range of professionals collaborated to explore these issues and develop a series of recommendations outlined in the report ‘Smoking Cessation in Pregnancy – a call to action’.
Subsequent action has been driven by the ‘Communication with Women Working Group’, which aims to increase and improve appropriate messaging both between health professionals and with the public.
Current activity includes:
• Developing a referenced and evidence-based key message resource
• Improving awareness and implications of the dangers of exposure to carbon monoxide
• A mapping exercise of research studies and innovative initiatives
• Supporting the recruitment of pregnant smokers into a pilot of the Smokefree Baby app.
• An annual conference for key stakeholders to review progress
This session will provide an opportunity to hear about the work programme and to discuss how the Group can support your practice in the future.
