Abstract
Smoking is extremely common in people with mental disorders, causing major reductions in life expectancy and quality of life whilst presenting major economic costs to the NHS and wider society. In contrast to the marked decline in smoking prevalence in the general population, smoking among those with mental disorder has changed little, if at all, over the past 20 years. Smokers with mental disorders are just as likely to want to quit as those without, but do not receive the advice and support they need to do so.
During this interactive masterclass, smoking cessation experts Alex Bobak, Gay Sutherland & Jennifer Potts will provide a practical guide to smoking cessation in mental health, to assist services in effectively supporting people with mental illness to stop smoking. There will also be a review of the resources and tools available to support HCPs in their approach to addressing smoking cessation in this patient population.
