Abstract
Increasing an individual’s chances of success will result in increased quit rates for your service, helping you to be a best in-class smoking cessation service provider.
Whether a smoker succeeds in a quit attempt is a fine balance between an individual’s dependence on cigarettes and their willingness to make changes to improve their health. Assessing motivational levels, igniting self-belief and sparking good, informed treatment decisions will improve a smoker’s chances of quit success.
During this interactive masterclass, smoking cessation experts Russ Moody and Gay Sutherland will explore best practice in evaluating motivation levels and encouraging smokers to be engaged in decisions relating to their quit attempt. These include:
• Collaborative approaches of asking, listening and involving
• Providing an informed choice with regards to support and pharmacotherapies on offer, ensuring smoker and treatment are perfectly
matched
• Guidance on how to deal with challenging questions from smokers about their quit attempt
With the help of a short play performed by actors, Russ and Gay will dissect conversations typically encountered between stop smoking practitioners and smokers. The audience will have the opportunity to interact with the action by voting on how they would tackle the scenario. In addition, insights from survey data of NHS Stop Smoking Service users will reveal just how informed real-life smokers accessing treatment really are.
