Abstract
In 2010 my colleague and I presented at the UKNSCC ' Integrating A Clinical Model of Smoking Cessation into Routine Antenatal Care'. It was in its infancy at this stage but we now have the results 2 years on to share with colleagues in the field. It has been a huge success and in April 2012, it is to be published in the British Midwifery Journal.
Smoking Rates in pregnancy in Rotherham were high and on an upward trend. In early 2010 Rotherham undertook a major service re design of the smoking in pregnancy service pathway embedding intensive smoking cessation into routine antenatal care. The proportion of pregnant smokers who set a quit date increased from 33.7 % (2008-09) to 43.9% (2010-11) ( P<0.05). The percentage of women still smoking at the time had initially been on an upward trend since 2006-07 reaching a high of 27.3% during 2009/10. his trend has now reversed falling to 22.4% during 2010/11 and to 19.3 % in the first quarter 2011/12. Embedding Stop Smoking Services in routine antenatal care, using' Risk Perception Tool' and visual aids has engaged the hard to reach women into services without using any additional resources. (Other results will also be shared).
