Abstract
Research and evidence show that parental and peer smoking are the biggest contributors to children initiating smoking. Some studies show that children are twice as likely to start smoking before the age of 13 if one of their parents smokes.
Smokefree Play Parks is just the first step in introducing outdoor smokefree environments where families can enjoy fresh air and reduce the exposure of negative role models to their children.
Smokefree South West is working with partners to introduce voluntary smoking bans in play parks. We have undertaken some baseline research on attitudes of parents and carers on smoking around children and the introduction of a voluntary ban in their play parks. In addition to this we have produced a vox pops of both non smoking and smoking parents, to include in our Smokefree Play Parks toolkit and to support the case to Local Authorities for introducing a voluntary ban.
Attend this session to learn how we have developed our toolkit so that it can be adapted for use with a range of audiences. Find out from our research how best to take the initiative forward in your area and introduce cleaner and fresher environments for everyone.
