Abstract
In November 2006, QUIT's youth services project Break Free launched its first dedicated website, www.quitbecause.co.uk
Designed for the use of young people, the website offers access to a wide range of information centered on the dangers of smoking and smoking related issues.
Components of the website include:
• Facts and Myths
• News/Events
• Information on how to quit smoking
• Youth forum
• Links
• Images
• Competitions
Six months on since the website has been launched it is important to reflect on what impact the website has had, if any and how is it working for the young people it was designed for? By doing so the research should highlight the advantages of having a dedicated youth website within the remit of smoking cessation and/or the areas in which we need to improve upon or change.
Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify how our website is being used; are there some pages being looked at more than others and why? And to look at how the youth forum has helped young people discuss their worries and queries freely and whether they have been offered practical advice when needed. What’s more the research will examine if there are any areas of improvement that can be made to the website to facilitate its young users further.
In order to gather the information necessary to carry out this research, a number of factors need to be closely monitored. Namely the website itself, following the number of ‘hits’ the website obtains, reading the ‘tell us what you think’ page regularly and gathering figures on the quantity of resources the admin department are sending out to young people/ schools and teachers.
Furthermore, this research proposes working with young people themselves, conducting focus groups at both primary and secondary school level to observe how they interact with the website.
The findings of this research will be presented in a clear and concise poster- based format. Results will be illustrated both statistically and qualitatively.
Above all what the research will highlight is the value of having such an accessible resource open to young people.
