Abstract In 2015, ABMU HB invested in a new hospital based stop smoking service to support inpatients to quit or abstain from smoking whilst an inpatient. This audit aimed to discover the prevalence and management of inpatient smokers and adherence to NICE PH48 guidance, in particular, asking and documenting smoking status, offering and prescribing smoking cessation medications, offering referral for behavioural support to quit and advocating the hospital as a smoke-free environment.
The audit was initially carried out in July 2015 following service launch then repeated in January 2016 to ascertain the impact of the first 6 months of the new service and also to assist in further development of the service.
The results were mixed in terms of the fields audited. The number of referrals to the service remained low but use of pharmacotherapy doubled during the 6 month period.
Following on from the repeated audit continued promotion of the service is vital in order to increase rate of referrals and improve the management of inpatient smokers across the Health Board.
