No recent survey has been done, but an audit undertaken across a cluster of prisons in England in the last year showed a range of 62%-81%.
NHS England, PHE and NOMS are working together to reduce tobacco smoking in prisons by improving access to smoking cessation and harm reduction services.
People in prisons have higher rates of drug & alcohol dependence as well as respiratory disease which can complicate or exacerbate the impact of smoking tobacco on their health.
The model currently used in many prisons is effective, combining counselling, behavioural support, and access to nicotine replacement therapy. This paper describes the development of an enhanced model for smoking cessation using a ‘whole prison’ approach combining the current model with input from mental health, substance-misuse and physical activity professionals, incorporating brief intervention methods through staff in key areas across the regime. Increasingly important is peer support from prisoners embedding smoking cessation as a cultural change programme within the prison walls and through the prison gate.
