Introduction:
Smoking Cessation is a recognised treatment for smokers accessing hospital care. Introduction of E-cigarettes as cheaper and allegedly healthier alternative to cigarettes, has led many people to use them.
Aim
The aim of this study is to give us a better understanding of this increase in the use of E-cigarettes as an aid to quitting smoking for people accessing hospital stop smoking services by analysing their behaviour change, perceptions, and impact on health.
Method
Questionnaires were given to 40 participants recruited by the Croydon Respiratory Team and the hospital stop smoking service.
Results
Favourite brands were Vapour Zone Cigarette (15 participants) and V2 Cigs (7 participants). Use of this intervention was from one week to over 18 months. Patients age ranged from 29-79,17 female, 23 male. 15 participants had COPD. Participants were both single and dual users.
Findings show 21 participants reported improvement in breathing, 5reported reduced sputum, 15 reduced cigarette use and 16 quit smoking. 23 participants heard about E-cigarettes through the media, 11 from friends, 3 through health professionals and 3 from relatives. Significantly 24 participants were unsure when they would stop using E-cigarettes.
