| Presenter(s) | Julia Wolska Public Health Advisor, London Borough of Tower Hamlets | Abstract The project sets a good example of a multi-agency approach to support schools with tackling smoking issues through enabling children to air their views in a creative, positive way.
Aim:
To encourage implementation of no smoking polices at school using a local child's design.
Method:
Pupils were taught about harms caused by smoking, including passive smoking and asked to design a unique signage which would discourage people from smoking at school entrances. The competition was open to year 5 and 6 pupils.
Results:
The LBTH Healthy Schools team observed an increased demand for delivering tobacco lessons over competition period. 6 primary schools entered the contest, submitting 35 posters. Creativity, innovation and research were evident in all the competition entries.
The winning design will be used as a prototype of an official no-smoking sign for Tower Hamlets schools. The sign will be then fitted in all primary schools across the borough. All of the runner up posters will be widely promoted across the borough, enhancing the smokefree message.
The final stage of the project will encourage each school to review their no-smoking policy. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to promote the stop smoking services for students, staff and parents.
