Abstract Presentation objectives:
On three occations the NGO(S)wedish (N)urses (A)gainst (T)obacco in cooperation with (Swedish)(A)ssociation of (H)ealth)(P)rofes-sionals invited nurses who were heavy tobacco-users to an intensive tobacco cessation week to determine if this model was an effective way to motivate colleagues to become tobaccofree.
17 nurses accepted the invitation 2007, 15 nurses 2010 and 20 nurses 2012. A total of 52 nurses. The cessation weeks retreats were led by expert nurses from SNAT. Daily use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in group sessions and other activities to strength the members of the group were used.
Presentation contents:
In 2007 group a follow up was done 3 month after quitting. 100% were tobacco-free. Six months after 100% remained tobacco-free and 1 year after 15 of 17 nurses (90%) were still tobacco-free!
The 2010 group resulted in 13 of 15 nurses tobacco-free both at 3- month and 9- month Result after 1 year was 11 of 15 nurses still tobacco-free. (90 %)
The 2012 group 6- month result will be presented on the conference. In September 2013 the total result (1 year) will be ready.
Conclusion:
The follow up results after one year for the first two groups are extremely positive and encouraging (90%). Reasons for success include nurses helping nurses to quit, the intensive week timeframe, use of MI and follow-up during one year´s time. An important benefit also included these tobacco-free nurses becoming more aware of helping patients to be tobacco-free. Some of the participating nurses are today educated and work with tobacco cessation in their daily work. It is interesting to see if the result from the third group (2012) will be the same. 6 month follow-up will be presented on the conference.
