Abstract Sefton Support, the specialist stop smoking service, Sefton PCT and community pharmacy have collaborated to implement a PGD to give clients easier access to Champix.
In the first year of the PGD 1,202 smokers have successfully quit using the Champix PGD. The results show an increase of 8% in CO validated Champix quitters and a 14% decrease in Champix clients lost to follow up.
The PGD is for Sefton Support’s clients. After the initial consultation, appropriate clients requesting Champix are referred directly to a community pharmacy where the PGD is followed and Champix dispensed.
Thus access to Champix is similar to the NRT voucher scheme and suitable clients no longer need to visit a GP to get a Champix prescription.
The PGD was launched in January 2012 with all 66 community pharmacies invited to a training event.
Client feedback was positive from the start, especially from those who had previously needed a Champix prescription from their GP.
Sefton Support plays the central role in ensuring the PGD continues to be successful. The service works closely with community pharmacy and if a pharmacist leaves, Sefton Support ensures training is arranged with the new pharmacist to ensure access to Champix is maintained.
