Working towards smokefree pregnancy
Jane Sunter, Performance and Delivery Improvement Manager, Smokefree North West, Manchester, UK
Abstract
Smoking during pregnancy is the largest, single preventable cause of neonatal and infant ill health and death in the UK. To ensure the North West reduces smoking prevalence in pregnancy from 19% to 15% by 2010 significant action is required. This presentation will outline one programme’s collaborative approach to promoting Smokefree pregnancy.
Workstreams that will be highlighted include: The initiation of a Smokefree Pregnancy Network to act as a steering group to ensure relevant engagement from all joint partners. The development of a Smoking in Pregnancy Audit conducted across all 24 PCTs, related maternity services and the wider community setting. Developing recommendations for service improvement and redesign based on the results of the audit and best practice Hosting a Smokefree Pregnancy best practice sharing event to launch a regional campaign and bring together services and joint partners. The key findings and recommendations of the work programme will be examined within a backdrop of both a national and regional campaign aimed at reducing the rates of smoking and pregnancy. Evaluation of the wider impact of this work within Stop Smoking Services and Maternity Services as well as future directions for this work will be discussed.
