Making smoking cessation accessible for mental health service users
Helen Hartley, Lead Specialist Stop Smoking Advisor, Leeds NHS Stop Smoking Service, UK
Abstract
In January 2007, Leeds PFT went smoke free throughout their buildings. In June 2007, Leeds NHS Stop Smoking Service commenced work on developing smoking cessation services within mental health settings.
As a result of the production of the ‘Smoking Cessation in Practice’ document and the growth of work within the mental health trust, Leeds volunteered to be a pilot site for cessation work within a forensic setting. The pilot was given funding from Care Services in Partnership (Yorkshire and Humber) towards costs of printing resources and funding staff support.
The pilot was commenced in January 2008 and ran for eight weeks. It ran at a forensic in-patient unit and functioned as a drop in session. The unit was audited before and after the pilot. As a result of the pilot and its findings, a ward round now takes place every week at the unit and incorporates all the wards not just the ones included in the pilot. The funding was used to produce a planner, poster, referral pad and flyer. The pilot received a ‘Yorkshire and Humber Smoke Free’ award, which is proudly displayed at the unit’s pharmacy. It is hoped now to use this work in further units and to develop the service further.
