Midwives using a positive consent model for referral

Abstract
This presentation will discuss a new system of fast-track referral that I have started within my area of work, for midwives to use, in the form of a ‘Positive Consent’ model. The objective is to increase the levels of pregnant women quitting smoking.

About the presenter
Joan is employed by Central Lancashire PCT and has a duel role, as a Stop Smoking Service Coordinator and Adviser in Pregnancy. She joined the service after a varied background in Occupational Health and Safety, midwifery and nursing. Her work in the pregnancy area involves, engaging with the midwifery services, developing fast-track access to the specialist adviser, improving care-pathways and protocols. The objective is to, identify all pregnant smokers as early in the first trimester as possible, improve support and quit rates, reduce maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. Also, provide an equitable and accessible service for pregnant smokers and their family members.
