Smoking cessation in Denmark
Ernst Doets,
Psychologist, Danish Cancer Society, Copenhagen, Denmark
Abstract
Background: The Danish Cancer Association has developed two standard smoking cessation intervention methods which have been implemented all over Denmark during the last 10 years. Smokers are counselled individually or in groups. These standards are run by healthcare personnel. Since 1995 well over 5,000 smoking cessation-counsellors have been educated.
Effectiveness on a national level: The standard has been investigated in order to find the effectiveness. A systematic follow-up has been made of 3,628 participants in smoking cessation groups or in individual counselling interventions in different settings in Denmark.
Results: The results show that with the most conservative
measure method 16.6% of the smokers are smoke-free measured after twelve months. Among participants, who accomplished at least 75% of the intervention, the rates of continued abstinence twelve months after, are nearly 20%.
Conclusion: We believe that it is possible to implement smoking cessation interventions across a country, reaching a wide target group of both resourceful and non-resourceful smokers. The cessation interventions are carried out by staff that have received only three days of training and have no other particular therapeutic skills. Furthermore research shows convincing cessation rates at a national level.
