Chilean strategies for tobacco control

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Review of the strategies used in Chile to decrease or to eliminate the environmental tobacco smoke.
METHODOLOGY: Chilean article revision published from year 2000 and interview with active doctors in the tobacco control.
RESULTS: Law Nº 19.419 published in the Official Newspaper the 9 of October of 1995 before the alarming increase of tobacco consume; it was inefficient and insufficient so in March 2006 this law was modified. Established the following points: 1) Prohibition of the publicity, direct as indirect and concealed. 2) Prohibition on sale to less than 300 feet of the educative establishments, and the publicity in points of sale located to 900 feet of these establishments. 3) The bars and restaurants that have less than 100 square meters will have to choose between being smokers or nonsmokers and, in whom they are declared as smokers cannot admit minors of 18 years, while the places with greater surface can fit up a hermetic area with ventilation for smokers. The transgressor may pay between US$ 28 and 28,300.
