Best practice for smoking cessation within mental health services
Ronnie Troughton
Abstract
It is well known that people who suffer from mental health problems have much higher rates of smoking prevalence than are seen in the general population. Yet specialist services have been slow in addressing the special difficulties that quitting presents for these clients. Drawing on experience from a recent pilot project as well as on the wider literature, this session will explore possible ways forward in the treatment of mental health service users. Amongst other issues, we will look at the suitability of group treatment for these clients, and the special challenges presented by the setting up and running of a specialist service in an inpatient setting. A co-presentation as part of the session will look at the related issue of smoke free mental health services.
