Patricia Hodgson
Abstract
Ninty percent of exposure to secondhand smoke occurs in the home > The majorty of deaths due to secondhand smoke is due to smoking in the home. Over 17,000 hospitalisation of chdilren is due to their parents smoking. The benefits of promoting smoking restrictions in the home include not only protecting everyone living & visiting the home from exposure but it also encourages people to quit, young people not to start and employees to support smoking restrictions in the workplace. A smokefree home also has been found to be a significant factor in relapse prevention. The presentation will present the West Yorkshire Smokefree Home scheme, which was launched in 2002 with a grant from the Department of Health. Discussion will include informaiton about its development including use of social marketing principles. The Choosing Health White Paper has identified social marketing as an important and currently under utilised approach that has real potential to make a significant contribution to both national and local health promotion work. After 3 months, a questionnaire is sent to people signing up to the campaign. Results from the questionnaire over the past three years will be highlighted, e.g. the percentage of people signing up for the three option: a totally smokefree home; smoking only in one room; or pledging not to smoke in the presence of children; problems & barriers in implementing smoking restrictions, the number of homes with children in which smoking was allowed and the impact on smoking behaviour. Since its inception many places across England has adapted the scheme to their own local needs.
