Abstract
Cannabis, in various forms, is used by a significant proportion of tobacco smokers who present for help to quit smoking. This session will explore the effects of regular cannabis use on the motivation to quit smoking and will highlight some practical difficulties, harm reduction strategies and relapse prevention issues.
Biography
Nicky Willis has been working in the field of smoking cessation since 1993, when she set up the first community smoking cessation service in the UK, in Canterbury, Kent. During the 1990s she worked on clinical smoking cessation research with Professor Robert West at St.George’s Hospital Medical School and Gay Sutherland at the Maudsley Hospital. In 1999, Nicky went on to found STOP! Magazine, a self-help publication for smokers in the UK and USA. From 1999 to 2003, Nicky produced 72 editions of the magazine and a number of training publications for health professionals working in the smoking cessation/tobacco control field. These days, Nicky manages smoking cessation services in Medway and Swale in Kent and recently co-authored the regional Best Practice Guidelines for Stop Smoking Services in the South East region of the UK.
