Roy Castle Fag-Ends smoking cessation within prisons
Melody McGrillis
Abstract
Roy Castle Fag-Ends Community Stop Smoking Group have been involved in the provision of stop smoking support for inmates within HMP Altcourse, HMP Kirkham and HMP Liverpool. This came about when the local Health Authority did not proceed with their original plans to offer support within the prisons. As Roy Castle Fag-Ends name was known for providing smoking cessation support, the Development Manager was approached and asked for guidance in what the prisons could do next to ensure that support was provided for their inmates.
The prison service now runs up to 4 groups each week in both HMP Altcourse and HMP Liverpool. Each group lasts for 12 weeks with between 10-15 inmates on each course. Prisoners are also able to access to the Fag-Ends free-phone telephone help-line.
Challenges that the service have encountered are;
- The amount of inmates on a waiting list and how soon they can access the next course.
- The number of inmates lost to follow up. This is due to the nature of the building as the transfer of inmates to another prison or if they are released can pose a problem when following up in their successes.
- Continuity of support given to prisoners if they are transferred to another prison. Currently if an inmate that has just quit is transferred to a prison where Roy Castle Fag-Ends are providing a smoking cessation service, they are automatically given a place on the group for continued support. If an inmate is transferred to another prison, they are given one week’s NRT to take with them.
