Poster presentation:
Primary care smoking cessation provision - training and support
Kerry Lynch and Alison Nichol
Abstract
Northumberland Stop Smoking Service covers a large and mixed urban and rural geographical area. It has developed a wide network of provision in partnership with primary care throughout the county to complement the Level 3 provision offered by the specialist team. An integral element of this work is the training programme and support offered to staff operating as "Intermediate" or "Level 2" advisors. All training provided by the Stop Smoking Specialists is standardised across the service. Advisors attend a one-day initial intermediate training session, followed 6 weeks later by a workshop on smoking cessation medications, Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Zyban. In addition, annual support sessions are organised where advisors can update their knowledge and skills and share good practice. The service maintains an up-to-date advisor database, through which attendance at training, levels of activity and results are monitored. An Advisor Award Scheme has recently been introduced to reward good practice, results and innovation.
This presentation will outline the primary care smoking cessation provision in Northumberland and describe the components of the support and training programme. The authors hope to gain some insight into other service training programmes through questions and discussion and will encourage participants to consider how a coordinated and structured support package can have a positive impact on the quality of a service.
