Poster presentation:
Exploring smoking cessation issues in the prison setting - experiences from the North East
Kerry Lynch, Deborah Scott and Kent Flanigan

Abstract
The workshop will involve participants in discussions, exploring issues and solutions to problems faced by Stop Smoking Services in prisons.

To set the scene there will be a presentation on services developed in the four prisons in Durham and Northumberland, outlining key issues encountered and ways in which these have been addressed.

The second part of the workshop will give participants opportunities to raise issues faced in their own localities. These will be debated and discussed and as a result hope to inform participants thinking and practice on return to their localities. Although not a full list of potential issues, the presenters anticipate the following issues being aired and will prepare examples of practice in relation to each to stimulate discussion:

* Use of NRT and Zyban - types available, DH funding, Pharmacuetical company funding.
* Access to prisons and prison staff - gatekeepers, escorts, central sessions, services on the wings, "The detail" and security comes first.
* Adhering to protocols, systems and ways of working.
* Training needs - Intermediate Advisors and involvement on completion of training.
* Capacity of Stop Smoking Services to deliver to this hard to reach, minority group - labour intensive, small population, one of several hard to reach groups.
* Champions.

At the end of the workshop participants will have been able to share experiences and help each other to identify possible solutions or ways forward on return to their localities.
