Poster presentation:
Rising to the challenge of increased stop smoking targets
Katherine Galt
Abstract
Newcastle and North Tyneside Stop SMoking Service covers Newcastle and North Tyneside Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) serving a population of about 460,000, where smoking prevalence is among the highest in England. The Stop Smoking Service has consistently met increasing nationally agreed targets since 1999, when it was set up. In 2005, greatly enhanced local targets were put in place, to further address inequalities in health, reduce smoking prevalence and improve health in the population. This presented the challenge of increasing stop smoking activity within existing resources. A range of initiatives was discussed and planned to meet this chalenge. Emphasis has been placed on partnership working in primary care, workplace, comunity and local authority settings. This had led to an increase of professional disciplines undergoing stop smoking training.
The presentation will describe the diverse range of initiatives that have attracted increased numbers of smokers into the service, including partnership work with SureStart, drop-in clinics, out of hours provision, and the setting up of a stop smoking adviser "bank".
