Biography
Currently a research clinical psychologist at the Tobacco Research Unit, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, & Honorary Consultant at the South London & Maudsley NHS Trust Smokers Clinic. I have been involved in treating and researching nicotine addiction for 20 years. In addition to research trials of the nicotine nasal spray, patch, inhaler, and the sublingual tablet, with my research colleagues, I have investigated the potential of naltrexone, mecamylamine, and combined NRT therapy for smokers. I have also been examining the potential of reducing the harm for smokers unable or willing to quit, through studies on new cigarettes prototypes, such as Premier and Eclipse. Recent research interests have included; collaborative studies trying to identify genes related to smoking, investigations of the role of smoking and quitting on oral health and immune function, and a large scale randomised trial comparing NRT vs bupropion vs combination treatment with behavioural support for smoking cessation, supported by the Medical Research Council and DH. Currently on the Board of Trustees of QUIT, and President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco - Europe.
