Smoking cessation with muslim men

Abstract
Background
Newham PCT received funding from Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to develop services to meet the needs of Newham's diverse population especially Bangladeshi and Pakistani men who have the highest rates of Smoking in Newham

The PCT recruited a Stop Smoking Advisor for Communities who has been working with a local Imam employed by Newham University Hospital Trust as a Multi- faith Manager to engage with local Mosques.

Work undertaken
A leaflet on Islam and smoking was produced which targets the Muslim community. It provides an Islamic perspective on tobacco use. The leaflet has had the approval and endorsement of the Muslim Council of Britain.

An Initial service provision meeting was held by Newham SSS, NUHT Imam and stakeholders from the Muslim community. From this followed plans which have been undertaken:

- to employ male sessional Stop Smoking Advisors with community languages to carry out mosque based work before during and after Ramadan.- 6 Advisors recruited

- To provide advisors with a tailored level 1 course for work with Mosque Imams and the Muslim community (completed in September 2005)

- Briefing Mosque Imams on Smoking health and Islam - 16 

- Offer Mosques " Smoking Islam and Health" presentations - 7 presentations provided

- Stalls outside Mosques and the High Street to provide advice and information and to recruit smokers to NSSS - 17 stalls held

Outcome:
Engagement of16 local mosques 
The project has received 188 referrals to Newham Stop Smoking Service from Muslim men.
