Poster presentation:
Acceptability and short-term outcome of an Internet-based smoking cessation programme
Denise Barlow
Abstract
Introduction: Not all smokers wish to attend face-to-face smoking cessation treatment. With increasing numbers of people having access to the internet, web-based cessation programmes may hold some promise in helping smokers stop.
Objective: To evaluate the acceptability and effectiveness of an internet-based stop smoking programme in a cohort of smokers motivated to quit.
Methods: One hundred and twenty five participants were recruited from among smokers, motivated to quit, living in the Auckland region. All participants were provided with free licenses to use 'SmokeStop', an internet based smoking cessation programme that provides an interactive motivational interviewing based workbook, email, live chat and mobile phone text support over 8 weeks. They were also provided with an 8-week supply nicotine replacement therapy. Participants will be followed up at 4 weeks and 6 months after their quit date, and self-reported 6 month abstainers will be verified by measuring carbon monoxide in their expired breath. Acceptability of the SmokeStop programme will be measured via a questionnaire at the end of treatment.
Results: This presentation will report on the initial findings of this project including the acceptability ratings and 4 week and 3 month self-reported continuous abstinence rates in the cohort.
