Poster presentation:
Does one size fit all?

Deborah Ritchie

Abstract
The presentation aims to explore the need for flexible services in smoking cessation in disadvantaged communities,in particular in relation to relapse. Drawing on a narrative inquiry of a smoking cessation service in the West of Scotland it is suggested that a 'one size fits all' service may not meet the needs of all smokers. In this study we have examined the narratives of smoking and quitting and explored how these narratives might be used as a resource for giving up smoking.
A process evaluation was conducted using the narrative inquiry method, to capture the perceptions of the participants and the group facilitator regarding the effectiveness of the new methods in creating and supporting change. Data were collected in the form of:
11 observations of smoking cessation groups over six weeks.
5 debriefing interviews with the group facilitator
10 in-depth interviews pre-group
11 in-depth interviews post group
The key findings suggest that an approach that uses narratives that are sensitive to local culture in terms of language and local smoking cultures can facilitate more appropriate and accessible services. Moreover participants valued the flexible nature of the service delivery and in particular used the opportunities for ongoing support for lapses in their intention to quit.
