Still smokin' after 23 years - No Smoking Day 2006; the official results!
Ben Youdan
Abstract
March 8, 2006 was the UK's 23rd No Smoking Day. The campaign aims to provide an opportunity for smokers who want to stop by organising an awareness day to promote the benefits of stopping and the support available. Based on trends from previous campaigns an estimated 2 million smokers were predicted to try and stop on the day. In response to vote for smoke-free legislation, approximately 40% of smokers polled by the No Smoking Day charity expected to try and stop on the day.
Early evaluation results from media tracking, web hits on the campaign website and opinion polling suggest that 2006 will set new records for smoker participation in the Day.
The presentation will draw on the full range of evaluation measures to review the impact of No Smoking Day 2006 on smoking behaviour. This includes self reported data on quitting, cutting down, use of cessation advice and the use of cessation medications. Media impact and coverage, cost effect, and data from smoker's helplines will be reviewed. Indicators of campaign impact on smoking behaviour are gathered via the triangulation of data from a variety of sources as randomised controlled trials are not appropriate for this style of intervention. Due to the nature and scale of cessation attempts made on the No Smoking Day it is not possible to CO validate all self reported quitters.
No Smoking Day 2006 was in the aftermath of MP's voting for comprehensive smoke free legislation. Smoke-free has had a huge media profile, evidence from polls conducted by No Smoking Day suggests that it has been a significant trigger for smokers to make cessation attempts. Smoker participation in No Smoking Day will be examined in this context.
